A simple, comforting British snack. Mature cheddar cheese melted onto bread with sweet caramelized onions. Perfect for a quick lunch or afternoon treat.
Heat olive oil and 1 tbsp butter in a frying pan over medium heat.
Add the sliced onion to the pan and cook gently for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and caramelised. If they start to burn, reduce the heat.
Stir in Worcestershire sauce (if using) during the last minute of cooking.
Spread the remaining butter on one side of each slice of bread.
Place two slices of bread, butter-side down, onto a baking tray.
Divide the caramelised onions evenly between the two slices of bread.
Top with the grated cheddar cheese.
Place the remaining two slices of bread on top of the cheese, butter-side up.
Grill or bake in a toaster oven at 180°C (350°F) for 5-10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and golden brown and the bread is toasted.
Serve immediately.
