Preheat your grill or broiler to a medium-high heat setting.
Lightly toast the bread slices on both sides using a toaster or under the preheated grill/broiler.
While the bread toasts, mix the grated cheese in a small bowl with the Worcestershire sauce (if using) and black pepper (if using).
If using butter, spread it thinly over one side of each toasted bread slice.
Place the toasted bread slices (buttered side up, if using) on a baking sheet or grill pan. Pile the cheese mixture evenly onto each slice, spreading it close to the edges.
Place the baking sheet/grill pan under the preheated grill/broiler.
Carefully remove from the grill/broiler and let it cool slightly for a minute before serving.
