Soft and fluffy apple cinnamon rolls, bursting with apple cinnamon flavor and topped with a creamy cream cheese frosting. Perfect for a delightful breakfast or brunch.
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.
In a separate bowl, combine warm milk, melted butter, and beaten egg. Add to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
While the dough is rising, prepare the apple filling. In a saucepan, combine diced apples with a tablespoon of water and a pinch of cinnamon. Cook over medium heat until slightly softened, about 5 minutes. Let cool slightly.
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll it into a large rectangle, about 12x18 inches.
Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough. Sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon, then spread the cooked apples evenly over the cinnamon sugar layer.
Starting from one long end, tightly roll the dough into a log. Cut the log into 12 equal slices.
Place the slices cut-side up in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
While the rolls are baking, prepare the cream cheese frosting. In a large bowl, beat together softened cream cheese and butter until smooth and creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating until well combined. Stir in vanilla extract and milk, adjusting the amount of milk to achieve desired consistency.
Once the rolls are out of the oven, let them cool slightly before frosting. Spread the cream cheese frosting evenly over the warm rolls.
Serve immediately and enjoy!
Nutrition per serving (100g)
Make sure the milk is lukewarm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast.
For extra flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg to the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
If the tops of the rolls are browning too quickly, cover the baking dish with foil during the last 10-15 minutes of baking.
For a glaze instead of frosting, simply whisk together powdered sugar and milk until you reach your desired consistency.
