Warm and comforting sweet rolls filled with spiced Jersey apple and topped with a tangy cream cheese frosting. A perfect British breakfast treat!
In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, yeast, granulated sugar, and salt.
In a saucepan, warm the milk and melted butter to around 110°F (43°C). Add the warm milk mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until combined.
Add the egg and remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
While the dough rises, prepare the apple filling. In a bowl, combine the diced Jersey apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
Once the dough has doubled, punch it down and roll it out into a large rectangle, about 12x18 inches.
Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough. Sprinkle the apple filling over the butter.
Starting from one long edge, tightly roll up the dough into a log. Cut the log into 12 equal slices.
Place the rolls in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
While the rolls are baking, prepare the cream cheese frosting. In a large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter until smooth and creamy.
Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating until smooth. Stir in the vanilla extract and milk, adding more milk as needed to reach desired consistency.
Once the rolls are baked, let them cool slightly before frosting. Spread the cream cheese frosting over the warm rolls and serve.

For a richer flavour, brown the butter for the filling before spreading it on the dough.
Add chopped nuts, like walnuts or pecans, to the apple filling for extra texture and flavor.
If you don't have Jersey apples, other firm apples like Gala or Honeycrisp can be used.
Store leftover rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
