Thick slices of fluffy bread soaked in a rich custard mixture and pan-fried to a golden brown perfection. This Japanese-inspired French toast, known as Atsuyaki Torosuta (literally 'thick-cut toast'), is incredibly soft and custardy inside.
In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, milk, sugar, and vanilla extract until well combined and smooth.
Place the bread slices in the custard mixture, ensuring they are fully submerged. Let them soak for at least 5 minutes per side, or up to 10 minutes per side for extra custardy results. The longer they soak, the softer the inside will be.
Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet or frying pan over medium-low heat. Once melted and the pan is hot, carefully place the soaked bread slices in the pan.
Cook for 5-7 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Adjust the heat if necessary to prevent burning. Be patient and allow the inside to cook gently.
Remove the French toast from the pan and place it on a serving plate.
Dust with powdered sugar (optional) and serve immediately with maple syrup and fresh berries.

For a richer flavor, add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the custard mixture.
If you don't have heavy cream, you can substitute it with half-and-half or whole milk, but the texture will be slightly less rich.
Don't overcrowd the pan. Cook the French toast in batches if necessary to ensure even cooking.
Soaking the bread overnight in the custard mixture will result in an even more intensely flavored and custardy French toast.
Serve with your favorite toppings, such as whipped cream, fruit compote, or nuts.
