A warm and aromatic mulled wine perfect for a cozy gathering. Infused with orange, cinnamon, star anise, and cloves for a classic holiday flavor.
Pour the red wine into a large pot.
Add the sliced oranges, cinnamon sticks, star anise, and cloves to the pot.
If desired, add brown sugar to taste. Start with 1 tablespoon and add more as needed.
Gently heat the mixture over low heat. Do not boil! Let it simmer for at least 20 minutes, or up to an hour, to allow the flavors to meld together. The longer it simmers, the more flavorful it will become.
If using, stir in the brandy during the last few minutes of simmering.
Before serving, remove the spices and orange slices with a slotted spoon or fine-mesh strainer.
Ladle the mulled wine into mugs or heatproof glasses.
Garnish with fresh orange slices or cinnamon sticks (optional).
Serve warm and enjoy!

Do not boil the wine, as this can cause the alcohol to evaporate and alter the flavor.
Simmering the wine for longer allows the spices to infuse more deeply.
Adjust the sweetness to your preference by adding more or less brown sugar.
For a non-alcoholic version, substitute the red wine with grape juice or cranberry juice. Reduce simmering time slightly.
