Air Fryer Croutons

Whenever there’s leftover or stale bread, just repurpose it into crispy, crunchy, savory croutons!

This recipe for air fryer croutons has multiple seasoning options, perfect for topping soups, salads, and stews.

Air Fryer Croutons in a bowl

Air Fryer Croutons

The air fryer can do amazing things! Air fryers circulate air around foods, cooking them and making the outside crispy, with far less oil if they were baked or fried. Plus, air fryers save time and cleanup!

While I often make homemade croutons, I love cooking them in the air fryer and not heating up the oven.

3 Ingredient Croutons

BREAD Honestly, ANY bread you love is the best bread for croutons! Denser bread should be kept in smaller cubes but it will take longer to bake, while lighter, airy breads can be cut larger and won’t take as long to make. French, Sourdough, rye, or Challah, even seeded breads make great croutons!

OIL Olive oil adds flavor by itself and also helps the seasonings to stick to the croutons. A combination of butter and olive oil makes them taste even better!

SEASONINGS Salt and pepper are all it takes for crunchy croutons, but a dash of garlic powder and some dried rosemary gives them a rustic flavor. For heavily seasoned croutons, toss the bread cubes with butter and our homemade Italian Seasoning, or for a spicy version for soup, toss the breadcrumbs in adobo seasoning. Or, try a light seasoned salt.

cut up Air Fryer Croutons

How to Make Air Fryer Croutons

  1. Cut bread into desired cube shapes. Place bread into a large bowl.
  2. Toss bread with olive oil & desired seasonings. Put cubes in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
  3. Cook croutons in the air fryer for about 5 to 10 minutes, shaking occasionally until they are dried out & browned.

Stovetop: Place a single layer of croutons in a skillet and sauté them in oil until they are very lightly browned on all sides. Shake the pan to turn the croutons over.

Oven: Place croutons in a single layer on a cookie tray and bake them at 250°-300°F until they are crispy but not overly browned. Croutons burn easily so watch them, turning and tossing frequently.

seasoned Air Fryer Croutons in the air fryer

Storing Croutons

Once they are completely cooled, allow the croutons to dry about 24 hours or so to ensure they’re completely dried out. If they have any moisture at all, they will mold or soften in a sealed container.

Keep dried croutons in a zippered bag or airtight container at room temperature. They will keep for about 7 days.

Air Fryer Turkey Burgers

Juicy air fryer turkey burgers are easy to make and can be enjoyed all year long!

It doesn’t take long to form and cook ground turkey burgers! Serve them up with toasted buns, lettuce, tomato, sliced red onion, and our delicious barbecue sauce.

Air Fryer Turkey Burgers on a bun

Ingredients

I love a great burger (and even more when it’s an easy air fryer burger) and this recipe is no exception!

GROUND TURKEY Choose turkey that’s not labeled extra lean, that extra fat is needed to produce the juiciest finish! Chicken can be used but add some extra olive oil to keep the meat juicy as it cooks.

SEASONING Add a handful of seasonings (try our homemade seasoning salt) with a dash of soy sauce.

BINDER An egg yolk with some breadcrumbs to hold the meat together and you’re good to go!

Our Favorite Air Fryer

Our favorite air fryer is the Cosori 5.8QT. We love how much fits into it, how easy it is to clean and how crisp it makes our recipes.

ingredients in a bowl to make Air Fryer Turkey Burgers

How to Cook Air Fryer Turkey Burgers

  1. Combine all ingredients & form into 4 equal patties. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  2. Brush patties with barbecue sauce (if using) and place the patties in the fryer basket, evenly spaced apart.
  3. Cook for 6 minutes, flip, & cook for another 6 to 8 minutes. The patties should be a little crispy on the outside & evenly browned on both sides.
  4. Serve immediately with toppings & condiments.

Air fryers can vary. The first time you make these, check them a little bit early to ensure they don’t overcook. They should be a little bit browned on the outside with no pink inside and the internal temperature should be 165°F.

Tricks for Actually Juicy Turkey Burgers

  • Unlike beef, poultry needs to be cooked to the right temperature for safety, so check the temp with a meat thermometer once the cooking process is done. It should read 165°F (the same goes for ground chicken).
  • Chilling the burgers first helps them hold their shape and allows the flavors to blend. If you’re in a real rush you can skip this step but be gentle when flipping them.
  • If you only can get ‘extra lean’ turkey or chicken, add a little bit of fat for best results. A tablespoon of olive oil or some finely chopped bacon are favorites in our regular turkey burgers.
  • Most importantly do not overcook. I recommend an instant read thermometer! Meat is expensive and this is a minimal investment that ensures the best cook!

Toppings for Turkey Burgers

We have all the best turkey burger toppings! Put a variety of them on a platter or in bowls and let everyone make their own burger masterpieces! Here’s a list of what we like that makes burgers extra special:

Air Fryer Turkey Burgers with sauce on top

Leftovers

  • Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Reheat them in the air fryer for 3-4 minutes.
  • Freeze cooked burgers up to 2 months in a zippered bag with the date labeled on the outside.

Air Fryer Onion Rings

Finally, we can enjoy crispy, crunchy onion rings without a vat of oil!

We love air fryer recipes because they come out so crispy and are so easy to make! The air fryer needs less oil, creates fewer fat calories, and plus it takes less time. What’s not to love?

Ingredients

ONIONS We like large, sweet onions like Vidalias, but if Walla Wallas are available, those are the best!

FLOUR This simple dredge adds seasoning but most of all helps the coating stick to the onions.

BUTTERMILK & EGG This helps the crumbs stick. If you don’t have buttermilk, cream or milk will work.

PANKO Panko bread crumbs have more crunch for a crispy coating. If you only have regular bread crumbs, those work too.

How to Make Air Fryer Onion Rings

Make a double batch of these beauties, because you can be sure that they will disappear in no time!

  1. Cut onions into ½ inch slices and separate the rings.
  2. Combine flour, seasoned salt, & cayenne pepper in a small bowl. Set aside.
  3. Whisk eggs in another bowl until they are frothy. Stir breadcrumbs, oil, & cornmeal in another bowl.
  4. Dip each ring into eggs, flour, eggs, breadcrumbs, then place in the preheated air fryer.

  1. Fry rings in a single layer until golden brown & crispy on the outside, about 12 to 15 minutes.
  2. Remove onion rings from the air fryer & sprinkle with seasoned salt. Serve immediately.

Can you Freeze Onion Rings?

Freeze cooked and cooled onion rings in a zippered bag with the date labeled on the outside. They’ll keep fresh for up to 8 weeks in the freezer.

Air Fryer Grilled Cheese – Ready in 10 Minutes!

If you have an air fryer, grilled cheese sandwiches are the perfect easy lunch!! Crisp on the outside with melty cheese inside.

I love all of the awesome things I can cook in my air fryer from chicken breasts to Brussels sprouts. This air fryer grilled cheese tops the list for me for sure.

plated Air Fryer Grilled Cheese with pickle slices on top

Why I Love It So Much

Making a grilled cheese sandwich isn’t difficult but it’s even easier in the air fryer.

  • It’s easy to make 4 sandwiches at once (I have a Cosori XL 5.8qt).
  • They brown perfectly on both sides (and are not greasy).
  • I find them to be the perfect amount of crisp with melty cheese.
  • Super easy cleanup with just a wipe to the basket.

Make the classic pairing of grilled cheese and our delicious homemade fresh tomato soup, and a side of colorful fruit kabobs.

Ingredients

BREAD Any bread will do from sandwich bread to leftover French bread. Use what you have on hand.

BUTTER Lightly butter the bread with real butter. I love to add a tiny pinch of garlic powder to the outside of the bread but it’s optional.

CHEESE Sharp cheddar has great flavor but don’t stop there, add whatever is in your fridge. Brie, cream cheese, pepper jack, anything goes!

I often add a couple of slices of thick real cheddar and a single slice of processed cheese for great texture.

two grilled cheese sandwiches in an air fryer basket

How to Make a Grilled Cheese in the Air Fryer

  1. Butter each slice of bread. Place the bread butter side down in the air fryer basket.
  2. Add cheese to each piece of bread and top with another piece of buttered bread (butter side out). Sprinkle with garlic powder if desired.
  3. Cook 4 to 6 minutes, or until the sandwiches are crisp & golden brown.

Leftovers

  • Keep the leftover sandwiches in a covered container in the refrigerator for about 2 days. The best way to reheat grilled cheese sandwiches is to re-toast them in the air fryer for a couple of minutes.
  • Cube leftover sandwiches, toast in the oven, and make them into cheesy croutons for tomato soup!

Air Fryer Fried Pickles

Air fryer fried pickles are crispy and crunchy with lots of great dill pickle flavor and they can be made right at home!

We are obsessed with all things pickle (and of course fried pickles) and this crunchy, tangy recipe tops the list. Simply dip in the coating and air fry!

top view of Crispy Air Fryer Dill Pickles on a plate

Who doesn’t love crunchy dill pickles?

What Type of Pickles to Use?

Dill pickles are best for this recipe. Ensure your pickle slices aren’t too thin.

  • Pickle spears – have the most pickle flavor and are the juiciest because the pickle is thicker.
  • Pickle chips – or rounds are great for snacking. If making these, cut your own pickles to make them a bit thicker.
  • Sliced pickles – we love the crunch of these pickles, they have a higher coating to pickle ratio. Slice your own from large pickles to have thicker slices.

Ingredients and Variations

PICKLES Choose your favorite shape of dill pickles (above). We love spears or thick slices.

BREADCRUMBS Panko bread crumbs add a great crunch to this recipe although seasoned bread crumbs will work in a pinch.

LOW CARB Version: Ditch the flour and use a bit of almond flour instead. Swap out Panko bread crumbs with a combination of almond flour and crushed pork rinds (season them). Eggs are keto so follow the same steps in the original recipe.

How to Fry Pickles in Air Fryer

Air fryer pickles are a weird and wonderful treat that takes just minutes to put together!

  1. Pat drained pickles dry with paper towel. Put flour in one bowl, egg mixture in another bowl, & Panko mixture in a third bowl.
  2. Dredge each pickle in flour, then egg mixture, then breadcrumbs, pressing the breadcrumbs into the coated pickles.
  3. Spray each pickle with cooking spray & place in air fryer. Cook for 5 minutes, turn over, & cook another 4 to 6 minutes or until crisp.

Tips for Frying Pickles

  • Slice pickles yourself to get thicker slices (and more pickle in every bite).
  • Dab the pickles dry before coating, this helps the coating stick.
  • Work in batches by air frying pickles while breading other pickles.
  • Just before serving all of the batches can be reheated for about 1 minute.
  • Spray the pickles with cooking spray before putting them in the air fryer. Cooking spray can damage the basket.

What to Serve with Fried Pickles

Put the air fryer back to work on some of these appetizers! Air fryer taquitos, air fryer stuffed mushrooms, and some air fryer shrimp would all pair perfectly with fried pickles. Don’t forget a party pitcher of homemade lemonade or some tangy margaritas!

Air Fryer Cauliflower (quick side dish)

The air fryer strikes again for this easy-to-make recipe for air fryer cauliflower!

top view of Air Fryer Cauliflower on a plate with a fork

Cauliflower is a superfood and it roasts perfectly in the air fryer! Cook up a batch as a side dish, or as a guilt-free snack!

Easy Air-Fried Cauliflower

Air fried cauliflower is one of our favorite recipes it requires little prep and minimal seasoning and cooks in about 15 minutes.

The caramelization from the air fryer makes this dish even more flavorful.

Eat this as a side dish or use in place of steamed cauliflower in dishes like mashed cauliflower, to add to casseroles or even in roasted cauliflower soup.

Air Fryer Cauliflower in the air fryer before cooking

Ingredients/Variations

CAULIFLOWER – I prefer to use fresh cauliflower in the air fryer but if you only have frozen, use that!

Frozen cauliflower does not need to be thawed first. Simply brush with olive oil (or spray with cooking spray).

SEASONINGS We use garlic powder, salt & pepper, and parmesan in this recipe. Switch it up by trying different seasonings. Or coat the cauliflower florets with buffalo sauce and make “wings.”

How to Cook Cauliflower in the Air Fryer

It’s super easy and fast to cook up some tasty cauliflower!

  1. Prepare the cauliflower and toss with a bit of oil and seasonings (per recipe below).
  2. Place cauliflower pieces in the air fryer basket and fry until tender.
  3. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese and cook another few minutes until the cheese is melted and crispy.

For crispier cauliflower, cook in small batches in a single layer. Place all cauliflower in the air fryer together for 2 minutes before serving to heat.

If the cauliflower is wet (after washing) it will steam instead of roast so be sure to drain very well. If possible, I try to wash the cauliflower the day before roasting.

For crispier cauliflower, cook in small batches in a single layer. Place all cauliflower in the air fryer together for 2 minutes before serving to heat.

To reheat, air fry 3-4 minutes or until heated through.

Air Fryer Butternut Squash – Sweet & Savory!

Air Fryer Butternut Squash is the side dish that complements any entrée or the perfect addition to your favorite recipes from butternut squash soup to risotto.

This is one of the easiest ways to make this sweet winter squash.

cooked Air Fryer Butternut Squash on a white plate with seasoning

An Easier Way to Cook Butternut Squash

Butternut squash is hard to peel and cut when it’s raw so we skip that step in this recipe and cook it in halves. If your squash is too hard to cut in half, poke it with a fork and microwave it for 3-4 minutes first (I do the same with spaghetti squash if it’s too hard to cut).

  • Make sure your squash is small enough to fit into your air fryer, if not it can be cut into quarters.
  • Season with cinnamon and salt or even just salt & pepper.
  • Adding a touch of brown sugar will add sweetness and help with caramelization.

top view of Air Fryer Butternut Squash in the air fryer

How to Make Butternut Squash in the Air Fryer

  1. Cut butternut squash in half vertically and scoop out the seeds and pulp.
  2. Brush the cut halves with olive oil and sprinkle with cinnamon then salt and pepper (per the recipe below). Sprinkle brown sugar on top.
  3. Cook, cut side up in the Air Fryer until tender. Remove and slice into 1” thick pieces (they’ll look like half-moons) or scoop out and mash. Serve with a pat of butter.

Cubed Butternut Squash

If you purchase cubed butternut squash, it can be roasted in the air fryer as well. Toss with seasonings per the recipe below. Turn the air fryer on to 380°F. Cook 10 minutes, shake the basket, and cook an additional 5-7 minutes or until tender.

Ways to Enjoy This Recipe

Use this squash for any recipe that requires roasted butternut squash.

  • Serve it right out of the air fryer alongside baked pork chops.
  • Blend it with broth and add a splash of cream to make soup!
  • It’s perfect added to salads (especially our fave winter salad).
  • Toss it with cooked grains (like farro) for a great side or salad.

Air Frying Tips

  • Don’t cut the eggplant too thin, you want it to have texture.
  • Salting the eggplant draws out moisture and seasons it!
  • Even though some slices will be larger due to the natural shape of the eggplant, keep all of the slices the same thickness so they fry evenly.
  • Air Fry in a single layer in batches. Once all batches are cooked through, you can heat them all together at 400°F for about 3-4 minutes.
